How to Add a Product to a Collection on Shopify

Rather than coming in knowing exactly which product they want, many of the people who visit your store will only have a sort of general idea. But the thought of browsing your entire catalog may be overwhelming — to prevent visitors from getting frustrated and giving up, you should group together similar items into collections.
By splitting up your catalog into a series of collections, you enable visitors to narrow their focus to only the kinds of items that they are most interested in. Essentially, collections provide a shortcut in the customer journey, making the purchasing decision more manageable and improving your odds of closing the sale.
Of course, you must account for the fact that you’ll likely add more products to your catalog in the future. So, to maintain this system, you’ll need to know how to add a product to an existing collection in Shopify. This guide covers how to do exactly that, and we’ll show you a few other useful ways to feature your products as well.
Adding a Product to a Collection using the Shopify Admin
There are two ways to add a product to a collection on Shopify: you can add it through the collection settings page, or you can do so through the product details page.
To add a product to a collection through the collection settings page, simply follow these steps:
- Log in to your Shopify account and select the “Products” option in the left sidebar of the main control panel.
- After you select “Products”, a few options will open up below it. Select the “Collections” option listed here.
- Select the collection that you would like to add your product to — this will open the collection settings page.
- Scroll down to the “Products” section of the collection setting page. Use the search bar or “Browse” button located in this section to find the product that you want to add.
- Check the box next to the product you want to add, then select “Done”. This change will be saved automatically.

This method is especially helpful for when you want to add multiple products to one collection, as you can check off each of the products you want to include and add them all with a single click of the “Done” button.
Alternatively, to add a product to a collection through the product details page:
- Select the “Products” option in the left sidebar of the main Shopify control panel.
- Click on the product you want to add to a collection — this will open the product details page.
- Scroll down to the “Product organization” section of the product details page (this section is located in the right sidebar). Clicking inside the “Collections” field will open a checklist of all your existing collections. Select whichever collections you would like to add the product to.
- Save your changes to the product.

This method is most useful for when you want to add a product to multiple collections, as it’s much faster than going in and updating the settings page for each collection.
Adding Products to Pages using Shogun Page Builder
In addition to your collection pages, you should consider featuring products on other areas of your store as well.
For example:
- While your homepage is a good place to go over the more general benefits and values of your online business, it’s also prime real estate for showcasing specific products. Relative to the other pages on your site, your homepage probably gets a lot of traffic, and you can leverage this attention to supercharge a bestseller’s performance, help a struggling item get back on track, etc.
- Instead of just mentioning or linking to a product in a blog post, you should consider adding some sort of featured content box that provides more information (e.g., a product image and star rating) as well as an add-to-cart or buy-now button — this will help you generate more sales.
- You can use one product page to promote many different items in your catalog by including sections for related products or complementary products.
Shogun Page Builder is the perfect tool for this purpose. Indeed, this app makes it easy to add a product to any page on your Shopify store.
To demonstrate how to use Shogun Page Builder, let’s imagine that you want to add a featured content section for a complementary product to one of your existing product pages.
In that case, you would first need to import the page from Shopify into Shogun:
- After installing the Shogun Page Builder app, go to your Shopify account and select the “Apps” option in the left sidebar of the main control panel.
- Open Shogun Page Builder.
- Go to the “Pages” section of Shogun Page Builder. Here, you’ll see two tabs: “Shogun” and “Shopify”. Open the “Shopify” tab.
- In the “Shopify” tab, you’ll find all the pages on your store that haven’t yet been imported into Shogun. Set the page type filter to “Product”, then select the “Import page” button next to the product page that you want to import (you can also use the search bar here to find this page).
- Select whichever page layout option you prefer, then click on the “Import this page” button.

Once the page has been imported over, the next step is to add a “Product Box” element along with all the specific product details that you want to include:
- Return to the “Pages” section of Shogun Page Builder, but this time go to the “Shogun” tab — here, you’ll find all of your pages that have already been imported into Shogun.
- Select the product page you just imported.
- Click on the “Elements” icon in the left sidebar of the editor (it’s the one that looks like a plus sign inside of a circle) to open the element library.
- Scroll down to the “Shopify” section of the element library. These elements will pull data directly from your Shopify catalog, so you won’t need to go through the tedious process of manually adding in details such as the product title, image, price, etc. Click and hold on the “Product Box” element, then drag it over to wherever you want it to be located on the page.
- You will be promoted to select which product and variant you want to feature in the “Product Box” element. Do so, then click on the “Use this product” button.
- Drag any of the “Shopify” elements that you want to add into the “Product Box” element on the page. Your options include “Title”, “Description”, “Image”, “Image Gallery”, “Price”, “Variant”, “Quantity”, “Add to Cart” (button), “Metafield”, and “Reviews”. Again, the actual content for these elements will appear automatically, which could end up saving you an enormous amount of time in the long run.
- Whenever you’re done making edits, save and publish your changes to the page.

It’s worth noting that every Shogun element is fully customizable. For every feature that you add to your “Product Box” element, you’ll be able to customize details such as size, font, text color, background color, border style, and much more. You can also determine the exact number of pixels separating these elements from each other, allowing you to get the spacing just the way you want it.
This level of customization means you can use Shogun Page Builder to create just about any kind of content imaginable for your Shopify store, all without writing a single line of code.
